Map, ix + 417pp + 3 page publisher's adverts. Lacks half titlepage, three leaves loosening, fore edges of these leaves chipped and worn but causing only minor damage to the margins and none to the map or text printed on these leaves, first leaf of text taped along gutter, endpapers and first leaves damp stained, some minor staining few leaves, occasional foxing and other marking, endpapers browned. Original blind stamped cloth considerably worn at extremities particularly corners and head and tail of spine. Text is sound. A scarce account by a young medical doctor from Boston of his travels in China, Java and the Philippines in the period 1848 to 1850. Written partly as a series of letters to friends and family, and partly in the form of a narrative the author's style is lively, original and informative - altogether far from dull! The majority of the book covers his observations of China and the Chinese and includes chapters on Hong Kong, Shanghai and Macau as well as much on Chinese life as he sees it. There are also chapters on Manila, Java and Colombo. (When referring to this item please quote stockid 129787)
