Black and white photographic plates, 351pp, index, frontispiece present but apparently replaced into book in reverse with the blank side facing the title page, cloth a trifle marked and rubbed but generally a very good copy. An overview of China and the Chinese by a resident of over 50 years standing. The essays are many and various and touch on all sorts of aspects of Chinese life including the education system, mountain temples, lynch law, punishments, plays and actors, river life and family life. They were originally published in the 'North China Herald' and then in book form under the title of 'Lights and Shadows of Chinese Life'. In this edition they have been revised and enlarged.
